The social entrepreneur meetup this past Thursday was another success, featuring some presentations and an even broader array of attendees. This meetup was officially the seventh get together organized by Ryan Allis and the iContact crew, and they really seem to be building something worthwhile.
The presenters represented both the social activist side and the entrepreneur side of the coin. Representing the humanitarians was Danica of the Millennium Village Project. The project aims to become a model for achieving the ambitious Millennium Goals, which are 8 goals that all 191 member of the UN agreed to work toward achieving during the next Millennium. What the Millennium Village Project hopes will distinguish it from other such projects is in methodically tracking its successes and failures, and using that to increase efficiency over time. Building good metrics is certainly something that appeals to the business-minded among us, so hopefully the MVP will continue to gain support from the student and business communities.
The other presentation came from Brandon of the startup Bookmesh, which is a social network built around books. I’ll post more details soon, but for now I’m still waiting for my invite to the private beta. Brandon, help me out here.
There were plenty of other interesting endeavors I learned about at the meetup, and I’ll try to cover them more in the next few days. For now, have a look for yourself…
Shoeboxed – Organizing your receipts
SeeMeWin.com – UStream based network showing lottery winners and losers. Hard to describe, as most life-streamers are. They’ll be relaunching soon.
