Red Herring’s Tomio Geron has posted a nice summary of stats from the trade publication “Newspapers and Technology” detailing what newspapers are doing to stay relevant. The study makes clear that printed news is not enough in a world of hyperlinks, reader feedback, and video. It’s a good sign that papers are trying new formats for their product but, as I mentioned in the previous post, the decline in ad rates at the hands of Google, Yahoo, and other content scrapers is what I think is the major problem for news in this century.
A few major points:
92% of newspapers offer video (up from 61%)
97% offer RSS feeds (up from 76%)
95% offer reporter blogs (up from 80%)
