Facebook Tries to replace Gmail

August 20th, 2007 · No Comments

facebook logoWith the new ability to send emails from facebook to recipients both in and out of the “face-osphere” it is now possible to never use Gmail again! Wait, why would I want to do that? Good question.

As Pete Cashmore writes this is another way that facebook is trying to dig deeper into our lives, and make us more and more dependent on them. There’s nothing wrong with that, so long as they have a reason for us to depend on them, but I don’t see much incentive to drop my fluid and independent gmail account. To be fair, facebook is certainly not asking me to abandon my other email accounts, but I don’t really see much point in going halfway either. If I want to send an acquaintance a quick note, I’ll send a facebook message. If I want to send someone a message of any imporance, I’ll use email (and sometimes I even pick up the telephone).
