This week Google unveiled a new feature on the Google Maps platform. No, not My Maps, that was ages ago. No, not street view either. It’s user reviews for local businesses. Now when you search a business you can click a “more info” link to read user reviews (assuming someone has taken the time to write one). This adds to the professional reviews and photos they already scrape from other local info suppliers. Anyone getting overwhelmed by the new links appearing all over Google Maps these days?
Mashable has an interesting article on services hurt by this move, but I’m not as concerned. At some point users stop drilling down into their search results, y’know? And for people who really want to gripe about some place, TripAdvisor has become a magnet. If you’re a true foodie, you liekyl have your own blog or have had a Yelp account for a while. I think this move goes into the “me too” category of Google releases as opposed to the “Wowowee” category.
